William Wesley Whedon

Birth: Oct. 27, 1829 New York, USA Death: Mar. 24, 1907 Ann Arbor Washtenaw County Michigan, USA

Born in Rome, NY to Hiram Whedon and Margaret Avery, the first of his four wives.

William Whedon entered the dry goods business as partner to David Godfrey. In 1853 he embarked in business as a dry goods dealer at Chelsea. Michigan, and continued there for a period of twelve years.

He was a member of the Chelsea Methodist Episcopal church, and an official during his residence there. In 1865 he returned to Ann Arbor and entered into a partnership with A. J. Sutherland, under the firm name of Sutherland and Whedon, real estate and insurance brokers. He was always active in town and church affairs. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Church at Ann Arbor, and held several offices in that parish.

He was especially interested in the education of the young, and for twenty-three years was a member of the school board, during most of the time being secretary.

He married was married in September 1849, to Helen Mar Turner, (b. September 15, 1831), daughter of Robert and Caroline (Ellis) Turner.

Children included:

1. Helen Margaret, born 1852, died 1883; married Dr. W. J. Webb. 2. Caroline, born 1854, died in childhood. 3. William Turner Whedon, born July 20, 1859. 4. May, born 1863, married 1889, Dr. T. C. Phillips of Calumet, Michigan, later residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 5. Susa, born 1868; married Charles W. Coan, September 5, 1907, residing in Brooklyn, New York. 6. Sara, twin with Susa, instructor in English literature, high school, Ann Arbor.

He died March 24, 1907, at Ann Arbor, Michigan.
