About William Mansfield White

Only son of Hugh White, United States Congressman from New York. Graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton New York in 1853. Managed a family farm in Canaseraga, New York for about 10 years. This is probably Sweet Briar Farm in the town of Ossian, Livingston County, New York, which was originally owned by his father Hugh White. Ossian was in Allegheny County, New York but became part of Livingston County in 1856. William Mansfield White is in the 1870 and 1880 census for Ossian, Livingston County, New York.

He married Anna Maria Pierrepont on Jan. 23, 1863 of Pierrepont Manor, New York, daughter of William Constable Pierrepont and Cornelia Butler. Around 1883, they moved to Utica, New York where Anna Maria died September 22, 1884 at age 42, a year after the birth of her youngest child and William Mansfield died on January 2, 1896. There were six sons and five daughters.

A biography of William Mansfield White was written in: Oneida County, New York Biographies by Daniel Wagner. Our County and Its People, Part II: Biography. Pg. 89-91. Boston: The Boston History Company, 1896.

THE GROTON AVERY CLAN, Vol. I, by Elroy McKendree Avery and Catherine Hitchcock (Tilden) Avery, Cleveland, 1912. p. 355

In April, 1852, he took up his residence on his present homestead, a delicacy of constitution making it impossible for him to follow a professional life; he turned his attention to agriculture, and by farming and an outdoor life sought health and vigor in the mountain atmosphere of our “Southern tier.”

When the rebellion broke Out he made three attempts to enter the army, but was prevented by physical causes from taking the active part in the war that his patriotism prompted him to take.

Mr. White was the first Republican Supervisor of the town of Ossian, and in 1872 he was the candidate of the Liberals for Representative in Congress, but since then he has acted with the Republican party.
