About William James White

Mine Inspector Report -

Accident No. 1 — October 4th. A premature explosion occurred at the 43rd level south of No. 5 shaft, Calumet branch of the Calumet & Hecla Mine, by which William J. White and Frank Oscar Waatti lost their lives.

These men had been working in a cutting-out stope and during the day drilled three holes. They charged two and were charging the third when the explosion occurred. There was no one in the stope except the unfortunate men. Upon investigation a broken wooden rammer was found. This leads us to think that they had been using the rammer to put the dynamite down the hole.

An inquest was held before Justice Fisher.

The jury returned the following verdict: "We, the undersigned jury, find that William J. White and Frank Oscar Waatti came to their deaths at the 43rd level south of No. 5 shaft, Calumet Mine, on the 4th day of October, 1898, by a premature explosion of powder while in the act of charging a hole."

About William James White (suomi)

Houghtonin piirikunnan kaivostarkastajan raportti -

Onnettomuus nro 1 — 4. lokakuuta.

Näyttää siltä että he olivat käyttäneet sauvaa dynamiitin sullomiseen porareikään.

Kuolinsyyntutkintaa johti tuomari Fisher.

Valamiehistö päätyi seuraavaan ratkaisuun: "Me, valamiehistö, toteamme että William J. White ja Frank Oscar Waatti menettivät henkensä Calumet-kaivoksen tasolla 43, etelään kuilusta nro 5, 4. lokakuuta 1898 ennenaikaisen räjähdyksen tapahtuessa panostamisen yhteydessä".
