He was a man highly esteemed and held the office of Clerk of the Court and was a Justice of the Peace. He was selectman 5 times, assitant magistrate 3 times, assessor 4 times and before there were any ministers on Nantucket, he performed a great many of the marriages. William came over to Nantucket as a "half share" man in 1662 to pursue occupation of sailor. After Sarah's death William married twice more with out any more children. His son John married Miriam Gardner, who was the daughter of Richard Gardner, Sr.
