  • William1 (Sargent), b. ca. 1624; d. at Gloucester, Mass., 9 Feb. 1715/6, "age 93"; m. at Ipswich, Mass., 10 Sept. 1651, Abigail Clark. He was a carpenter. On 28 Sept 1652 he was granted administration of the estate of his cousin Thomas Wathen, son of Edmond, who had died in England in the service of Prince Rupert.

William Sargent Sr. was born about 1624, perhaps in Gloucestershire England, and per William Richard Cutter, seems to have appeared in Gloucester, Massachusetts about 1649.

Added by Janet Shoemaker: Found in the Gloucester Vital records: His last name is spelled (In the marriage records): "Williame Sargante and he is listed as a 'carpenter'. His wife's name is spelled (in the vital record) 'Abegele' Clark, daughter of Edement, husbandman. Children: John born 13 March 1653 Andrew born 3: 10m : 1655. William born 16 August 1658. Samuel born 22 March 1660. Nathaniel 30 October 1663; died 7 November 1663. Abigail born 8 May 1665. Nathaniel born 28 May 1672. Joseph born 27: 1m : 1675. Mary born 24 November 1678. "William Sargent had grants of land in 1649; and he became the possessor of the houses and lands of Streeter and Baker. One of these houses was near the burying-ground, --- probably on its western side; and there he seems to have fixed his residence. He was a selectman several years, and representative in 1671 and in 1691. He married Abigail, daughter of Edmund Clark, "at a general traine at Ipswich," Sept. 10, 1651; and died Feb. 19, 1717, aged ninety-three, having survivaled all his compeers in the early settement of the town. His wife died March 8, 1711, aged seventy-nine. Their children were --- John, born 1653; Andrew, 1655; William, 1658; Samuel, 1660; Nathaniel, 1663; Abigail, 1665; Nathaniel, 1671; Joseph, 1675; and Mary, 1678."[2] Sources
