Odendaalsrus. - "Friday morning when my kids heard what happened to Uncle Jan, they cried."

Hendrik Janse van Rensburg said his wife and children were on their way to his father's farm, Nuwejaarsbosch. when they saw the many vehicles at the Barnards farmstead.

Hendrik's father, Willie, just lived 10 km away from where Jan Barnard, 73, was killed on Thursday night and his wife, Corrie, 72, was shot.

Willie Janse van Rensburg, 69, was shot dead in a farm attack on October 30 last year. Hendrik's wife and daughters were on the farm at the time of the attack and had themselves under the attackers.

Hendrik talked to Volksblad after Friday's murder of Jan Barnard.

"It scratches old wounds," he says.

"My family is still suffering from my father's murder and is not yet emotionally right.

"A farm attack scratches everything and one manages things differently. One doesn't just trust people again. ”

Janse van Rensburg's murderers were sent to jail by the end of August.

"It's a bit of comfort, but it can't bring my dad back," Hendrik says, himself a farmer.

"There is also no real justice, because the killers are still alive and even if they go to jail, it is easier for them than to work."

At New Year's Day only four farm workers and their families are left. There were always ten families, but Hendrik is in the process of moving everything from the farm to his own farm. Finally, only one worker will be left to look at the herd of cattle.

Willie Janse van Rensburg's granddaughter, Cristillie, and Jan Barnard's grandson, Christiaan, were both in matric at the Goldfield High School in Welkom last year. Mediclinic Welkom spokesperson Marissa Pawson said on Monday that Corrie Barnard was so traumatized that the hospital continues to restrict visitors to her. She is not in danger, but she suffers a lot of pain. She was shot in her hip and leg. Gerber Roux, minister of the NG church Moedergemeente in Odendaalsrus, says the Barnards were regular churchgoers. Although he has not been in the congregation for a long time, he will always remember Uncle Jan's beautiful collection of antique tractors. The tractors were uncle Jan's pride and were exhibited in one of the sheds on the farm. "They do not have a mark on it," says Roux. The police still follow all clues and Volksblad has heard one possible suspect's name is known to police. Hennie Gerber, security officer of Fundum Security, says the various police units' actions on Barnard's murder scene deserve praise. The scene was thoroughly investigated and everything was done to not disturb forensic evidence. ) Free State Agriculture (FSA) says on its website 20 murders were committed in 11 months on farms in the Free State. A total of 20 murders were recorded, of which 14 were farm workers or their children. This year, 70 incidents of farm violence have already been recorded in the province. Last year, violent crime on farms was committed in half of rural villages. This year, the figure has already risen to 55%. In 77.77% of farm attacks, suspects were arrested. Most arrests were done where farmers and police work together. The Rural Security Plan is the framework in which the police and farmers work together. A farm attack scratches everything and manages things differently. One does not just trust people again. - HENDRIK JANSE VAN RENSBURG
