Xenada Helen Shaffer Holland, age 101, a resident of Seneca Road in Elkins passed away in her home of 62 years at 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 with family by her bedside.

Mrs. Holland was born February 20, 1912 in Cumberland, MD, a daughter of the late Charles and Clara Adams Shaffer. She graduated from Rowlesburg High School in Preston County and majored in Home Economics at West Virginia University. She also studied Art at Davis & Elkins College.

She was married for sixty-two years to Lunsford B. Holland who preceded her in death October 15, 1996.

Surviving are one daughter, Lunada Stuart and two sons, Charles and Richard. General Charles Holland (Retired) and wife Nancy of Colorado Springs, CO. General Holland was formerly Commander in Chief of United States Special Operations Command. Brigadier General Richard Holland (WV Retired Reserve) and wife Dr. Marisa Holland of Elkins. There are nine grandchildren: Melissa Stuart Notz and husband Dean of Hillsboro, OR, Michael Stuart of Durham, NC, Major Charles (Chuck) Holland and wife Sharon of Lompoc, CA stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Justin Holland of Green Cove Springs, FL., Matthew Holland of Fincastle, VA, Bethany Holland of Charlotte, NC, Madison, Mackenzie and Brock Holland of Elkins. She has four great-grandchildren: Tristan, Gavin and Caitlin Holland of Lompoc, CA, and Julia Notz of Hillsboro, OR. Special nieces include Sandra Corder Walters of McCumber WV, Helen Shaffer Duckworth Flook of Smithsburg, MD and Norma Jean Shaffer Schnably of La Vale, MD.

Mrs. Holland was especially proud of being an elementary homeroom mother for fourteen consecutive years, serving fours years at the old Third Ward School and eight years at Central School. She was an active PTA member who enjoyed soliciting support for the school carnivals. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for several years, and also served on a committee for funding of the Randolph County United Way. She was a fifty- year member of G.F.W.C., a member of John Hart Chapter Daughters of American Revolution, a member of College Aid of Davis & Elkins College, a fifty-year member of Randolph Chapter No. 74, Order of the Eastern Star, a member of White Shrine, a member of Tygart Valley Ladies of Oriental Shrine Club, past President of the Lady Templars, and an advisory board member of the Order of Rainbow for girls. Xenada was a volunteer of Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for over forty years, a member of the Senior Center, and a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed swimming at the Elkins YMCA and, at the age of 84, was able to run a mile on the indoor track. She vacationed and visited with family in various states from the East Coast to West Coastoften bringing back to her home a small rock to remember the state she visited. She traveled the world with her husband to include Europe, China, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and Hong Kong, to name a few.

She had a zest for life--family was always her focus. She was recognized by many relatives as the "Best Cook in the Family," as she was able to prepare a delicious ten course meal with ease. She was a "Betty Crocker/Martha Stewart" rolled into one.

She supported her husband in all his endeavors including, Holland and Selders Motel and Seneca Motel. Her husband would often invite Motel guests home to enjoy a home cooked meal "fresh from his garden."

She was always more than willing to oblige. Xenada was a supportive spouse, an energetic Mother and a dedicated grandparent who will always be remembered and cherished by relatives and friends.

Friends may call from 12:30 to 4:00 pm Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. At 3:00 pm Sunday, a memorial service will be conducted by Randolph Chapter No. 74, Order of the Eastern Star. On Monday, July 1st, Mrs. Holland will be moved to the First United Methodist Church in Elkins for visitation from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, the funeral hour. Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley and Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli will officiate. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Garden near Gilman. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, P.O. Box 1484, Elkins, WV 26241 or to the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerns Ave, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Xenada Holland.
