About Yeshayahu Margulies "Y.M."

Syzia Margulies was a descendant of Naftali Herz Landau-Margalyiot of Zelechow and a grandson of Aron Margulies and Mayta Ester. He was born circa 1810 in Warsaw to Naftali Margulies and Chai (birth surname unknown at this time).

Szyia is refered to in I.L. Peretz's work as Yeshayahu Margulies and was I.L. Peretz's uncle. He often goes by the initials Y.M. (not to be confused with a Y.M. Morgenstern also referenced in Peretz's memoirs).

Syzia is also frequently mentioned in the Zamosc Yizkor book and was, apparently, the wealthiest gentleman in Zamosc. He was active politically, supporting the Poles during their 1840s rebellion against the Russians and was an extremely active philanthropist. He was responsible for numerous philanthropic activities mentioned in the Zamosc Yizkor throughout his life.

He is the grandfather of several other notable Margulies' from Zamosc, including Jakob who was for a time the chief engineer for the city and Ignacy a noted philanthropist in his own right.

Syzia and his family lived in a large home on the town square at Number 17 Stazsica, referenced below.

Stazsica 17:

The building was called Reynebergerowska in the late seventeenth century. With a narrow hallway on the axis of the four portals in the hall. The building is the oldest of the period with a decorative slat motif on the ceiling and portal. The yard has survived with a long bath and a semi-circular conical roof. Among the owners of the building who played an important role in the history Zamosc is the Margulies family who lived here since the second half of the nineteenth century. Szaja Margulies 1808-1878, the Jewish merchant, was a great patriot and was the wealthiest resident of Zamosc, helping the poorest in times of famine. During the January Uprising he purchased a large number of coats, and food. He was the grandfather of Ignatius Margulies a, landlord, social worker, philanthropist and president of “Fund Interest-Free.” He supported the construction of the airport, nursing home, and the fire department. Jacob Margulies was the city architect in the years 1928-1934. He worked on the construction of the power plant. He was arrested as part of the AB and sat in the Rotunda and died in the Zamosc Hospital in 1942.
