Younger was born in 1824. He was the son of William Welborn and Sarah Bryant. He passed away in 1920. Younger is often refereed to as Younger Welborn Jr. in records of the time.

Younger is listed as a member of "Newt Knight’s 1870 roster which Captain Newt Knight submitted to Congress in 1870 to petitioning Congress to compensate him and his men for having fought on behalf of the Union Army. He included the names of 54 men that he described as having remained “true” to the band and to the Union."[3][4]

In her book The Free State of Jones, Movie Edition: Mississippi's Longest Civil War , Victoria E. Bynum states the following offering source information on Page 243 footnote 47 [4] from the Union Army Pension Records. [7]

Younger Sr and Elizabeth Welborn moved from South Carolina to Mississippi around 1832. By 1839 they had move to Jasper County. According to family sources and documents, Turner and Younger Welborn Jr -- sons of William (Billy) and Sarah Welborn and their cousins William Elbert and Tolbert sons of Younger Sr and Elizabeth Welborn joined the Knight Company during the Civil War. William Elbert and Tolbert later joined the Union army in New Orleans.

V.E.Bynum (a Welborn cousin, author of The Free State of Jones) writes: In 1850 in Jones County, the Welborns were struggling farmers who raised surplus hogs but appeared to produce too little grain to be deemed self-sufficient. By 1860 in Jasper County, their grain production was sufficient, but they had minimal surpluses for the market. Billy and Sarah Welborn fared somewhat better. In 1850 they produced sufficient grain and surpluses in sweet potatoes, hogs, and wool. In 1860 they produced surplus wool and two bales of cotton.
