The two men had gone to Ness's home where Barends asked for a piece of bread. When she turned her back to fetch the bread, leaving the door slightly ajar, Barends stormed into the house. He attacked the woman, using a paint scraper to stab her and a wooden table and chair to beat her repeatedly.

Her body was found days later, with her poodle lying at her side, waiting for help to arrive.

  • Sentencing one of the attackers, Samuel Barends, to life imprisonment for the murder of 70-year-old Yvonne Ness, in October, 2003, Justice Bennie Griesel described the case as "one of the most senseless murders" to have come before him.
  • The second accused, Fanie Jeneke, who had been acquitted of the murder and convicted only of the robbery, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
  • On Wednesday, Judge Griesel convicted Barends of murder as well as housebreaking and robbery.
  • Jeneke was only convicted on the housebreaking and robbery charge. Both were acquitted of a rape charge.
