ZABULON CARTER was born in Great Bedwyn in September 1805. He married CATHERINE BATT at Great Bedwyn on November 22nd 1826, she bore him one son before her death. Zabulon then married TABITHA INKPEN (born Middx c.1809) in St Pancras in 1836. In 1841 he was a farmer, living with her in Great Bedwyn. He died in East Grafton in 1848 (6 168) and in 1851 Tabitha was a farmer and maltster, the farm being of 125 acres. She was still there in 1861. He had six children, the first by Catherine and the remainder by Tabitha, as follows; 1. ZABULON CARTER, born Great Bedwyn c.1828. He became a farmer, in 1851 he was living with his step-mother. He married his cousin TABITHA EDWARDS in Great Bedwyn on May 29th 1854. They have not been traced on subsequent census returns, she died in Hungerford 1/1862 (2c 138), he died in Hungerford 2/1873 (2c 155). 2. FANNY CARTER, born Great Bedwyn (Hungerford) 4/1839 (6 183). She married in Hungerford 4/1860 (2c 499). 3. ELIZABETH ANN CARTER, born in Great Bedwyn on May 17th 1841. She married in Hungerford 3/1866 (2c 419). 4. CHARLES HENRY CARTER, born Great Bedwyn (Hungerford) 3/1843 (6 1*). In 1861 he was an agricultural student, living with his mother. He has not been traced on the 1871 census, but by 1881 was a farmer of 200 acres at Watlington, Oxon, married to ELLEN (born Stowe Downham, Norfolk c.1842). In 1891 they lived at 4 Sydenham Villas, Bray, Maidenhead; Charles was now employed as a Commission Agent. By 1901 however Charles was working as a farm storekeeper, he and Ellen lived at 17 Hayley Rd, St Giles, Reading. Their children were; a. CHARLES HENRY CARTER, born Great Bedwyn (Hungerford) 3/1867 (2c 237). In 1891 he was living at home, employed as a tapman in a brewery. b. WILLIAM FREDERICK CARTER, born Great Bedwyn (Hungerford) 3/1868 (2c 235). He was living at home in 1891, employed as a brewery travelling salesman. c. MARY JANE CARTER, born Oxfordshire c.1871. d. HENRY CARTER, born Oxfordshire c.1872. He was a dairyman in 1891, living at home. e. ELLEN CARTER, born Oxfordshire c.1873. f. ELIZABETH A CARTER, born Dorchester c.1875. g. EDITH SARAH CARTER, born Dorchester c.1876. She was still living at home in 1901. h. FANNY CARTER, born Dorchester c.1877. i. RICHARD JAMES CARTER, born Chalgrove c.1878. In 1891 he was still living at home, employed as a junior clerk in a brewery. j. ALICE CARTER, born Chalgrove c.1879. k. KATE CARTER, born Wattington, Oxon c.1882. She was living at home in 1901. 5. JAMES CARTER, born Great Bedwyn (Hungerford) 2/1845 (6 178). In 1861 he was a farm labourer, staying on the farm of John C Hussey at Milston, Wilts. He married in Oxford 2/1868 (3a 885) to ELIZABETH FORTNUM J HAYNES (born Oxford c.1845) and in 1871 they were living at Manor Farm, Whitchurch, Oxon, where James was a farmer of 250 acres. Elizabeth died in Oxford 2/1874 (3a 377) and in 1881 James was living at Shurvill House, Goring, Oxon, as a farmer of 30 acres. He was still there in 1891, his niece Florence Carter (aged 10) was staying with him. 6. MARY JANE CARTER, born Great Bedwyn (Hungerford) 4/1846 (6 217). She married HENRY BROOKE in Hungerford 1/1868 (2c 343) but died in Marlborough 1/1869 (5a 53).
