About Zelma Eliza Willoughby

Zelma Eliza Merrill was born July 5, 1902, in San Jose, Arizona, to parents Henry Morgan Merrill and Amy Letitia Welker Merrill. In the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, she was 7 years old and listed as Zylma, and wasl iving with her parents, Henry, 43, and Amy, 35, and siblings, Morgan Clair, 12, Arny Lucille, 10, and Arthur Bruce, 5. They were living in York, Graham County, Arizona, and Henry was working as a farmer. He owned his farm but had a mortgage on the property. Henry and Amy had been married for 16 years.

In the 1920 census, the family was living in Solomon, Graham County, Arizona, H.M., 52, Amy, 44, Zelma,17, and sister Ruth, 15. I don't know why her sister, Ruth, was not listed in the 1910 census, since she would have been 5 years old at the time.

Zelma married Lloyd Clinton Willoughby May 31, 1927, in Prescott, Yavapai, Arizona. By the 1930 census, Zelma, 27, was divorced and living on Willow Road in San Mateo, California, working as a typist at Camp Fremont & U.S. Public Health Service Hospital #24.

By 1940 Zelma, 37, had moved back to Arizona and was living in Safford with her widowed mother, Amy, 65, at 1122 Central Avenue in a home which Amy owned valued at $2,500. Zelma was working as a stenographer for the soil conservation service. For the 52 weeks she worked in 1939 at 44 hours per week, she earned income of $1,200.

There is a 1940 U.S. Federal Census record for a Ruth Merrill, 36, who may have been Zelma's sister. She was 36 years old, living in Kingman, Mojave, Arizona, with her husband, Ray Merrill, 44, (maybe a distant relative of her father, Henry Morgan Merrill?) They had five children, Marjorie T., 18, Kenneth H., 15, Dwaine C., 13, Ruth C., 10, and Nelda L., 8. Ray was working as a liquor control agent for the state liquor control board. They were living in a home which they were renting for $30 per month. Marjorie was working as a stenographer at a service station. For the 38 weeks that Ray worked at 48 hours per week in 1939, he earned income of $2,200. The family had previously been living in Mesa in 1935. Ray had an 8th grade education, Ruth had 4 years of college, Marjorie was in the first year of college, Kenneth was in the 8th grade, Dwaine in the 6th, Ruth in the 5th and Nelda in the 3rd grade.
