also known by his title and posthumous name as Chou-ting-wang 周定王, was the first prince of Chou. He was the fifth son of the founder of the Ming dynasty, Chu Yüan-chang, and, according to the official records, Empress Ma. In 1370, when princedoms were created for the emperor's second to tenth sons, Chu Su was given the title Wu-wang 吳王, the prince of Wu of the Soochow-Hangchow area. In 1374, when it came time to build residences for the princes, a proposal to assign Hangchow to Chu Su was rejected by the emperor on the ground that the area was too valuable to the government as a source of revenue. It seems that during the following four years the matter was left unsettled.
