About mother of Margaret Douglas

MOTHER OF MARGARET DOUGLAS: NAME NOT KNOWN

The mother of Margaret Douglas has not been identified. The Reverend John Anderson had this to say about Margaret and her father: "The Earl had also a natural daughter, Margaret, who married Thomas Johnson, and on 10 November 1404 received from her half-sister Isabella, Countess of Mar, the Mains of Bonjedward and other lands. The Scots Peerage III: 155 As far as is presently known, Margaret's name is found in only one piece of surviving evidence, a charter dated 10 November 1404 made in favour of Margaret and her husband, Thome son of John, in which she is identified as the sister of Isabella, Countess of Mar and Garrioch. The name of her mother is not mentioned. Illustrations of the Topography and Antiquities of the Shires of Aberdeen and Banff. The Fourth Volume: pp. 730-31

Charter Evidence

10 November 1404: Charter by which Isabella of Douglas, Countess of Mar and Garrioch, confirms that she has given to her sister Margaret of Douglas and her husband Thome son of John, a twenty merk land in the forest of Jedwort and sheriffdom of Roxburgh, which land lay adjacent to her own demesne land of Bunegedwort. The land was to be held by Thome son of John for his lifetime, and following the death of Thome and Margaret it was to pass to Countess Isabella's nephew John of Douglas.
