Thanacotty Darmalingum Pather was married to Dhanam Pather. He was the brother of Vello, Veerapa, Meenachee and Kavery and another brother ( name unknown ).He was the brother-in-law of Singarvelu Pather and Pavaday Pather.T.D.Pather resided in Clairwood and stayed with his son Coopoosamy Darmalingum and daughter- in- law Visalatchee. He operated a private business as a freelance agent for the Indian Imigration Department, specialising in in birth, marriage and death certificates and processing applications for grants etc. He was an avid reader and letter writer. Once he wrote a letter and received a reply from Mahatma Ghandi. This letter and reply in housed in the Ghandi collection.
He also worked for " Pather's Agencies " in Victoria Street,Durban. This business was owned by Pavaday Ruthunam Pather. At a later stage he moved to Cape Town to spend some time with his sons Kandasamy and Nadas and his sister-in-law. He died in Cape Town on 22nd October and his mortal remains lie in the Woltemade Cemetary ( gate 10 ) in Cape Town.
