About wife of John Emery

John Emery ll (son of John Emery & Alice Banet) and his wife had the following children:

  • +3 i. John III Emery IMMIGRANT, born 29 Sep 1598, Romsey, Hampshire, England; married Mary Shatswell IMMIGRANT, abt 1647, Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts; married Alice Mary [ Mary Alice] Grantham, 26 Jun 1620, White Parish, Wiltshire, England; died 3 Nov 1683, Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.
  • +4 ii. Anthony Emery IMMIGRANT, married Frances <Porter> w/o Anthony Emery, 1628; died aft 9 Mar 1680/1.

John 2 and Agnes Northen Emery had as many as six children. There were three sons, i.e., John, Anthony, and Hugh who were respectively baptized 29 March1599, 29 August 1601, and 06 October 1604. Based on Romsey parish records and chronology, it is possible that there were three daughters, i.e., Mary/Margery born ca 160x and died 1610, Ellin, maybe a delayed twin of Anthony, who was baptized 07 Sept. 1601, and Lydia, who was born ca 161x, and married James Bailey in 1640."

Disputed Origins

Seen as Agnes Northend (daughter of John Northend III (abt 1588-1604) and [Alice Ibrook Alice Oldfield [Fairbanks]])

There are two different people named Agnes Emery (Northend) in the tree, each of whom are shown married to a different John Emery. Please do not confuse this one with the daughter of Ezekial Northend and Edna Halstead.

The identity of the wife of John Emery (buried in 1627) of Romsey, Hampshire, England, is not known. Secondary sources record it as Ann, Agnes, Agnes Northend, Margery, and Mary. Her name is not recorded in the christening entries for her children in the Romsey parish register. She may or may not be the Margery Emery buried 14 September 1610 in Romsey. She may or may not be the Ann Emery buried 1 November 1626 in Romsey. The 1890 Emery family history gives her name as Agnes, but provides no source or other justification. The link to Agnes Northend appears to be incorrect as the Northend family resided in Yorkshire rather than Hampshire.

His certain children are:

  1. John, bapt. 29 March 1599
  2. Anthony, bapt. Aug 29, 1601
  3. Hugh , bapt. Oct. 6, 1604

NOTE: This person is NOT Agnes Northend

The name of the wife of John Emery (buried 1627) of Romsey, Hampshire, England is unknown; there appears to be no evidence to indicate that it was Ann, Agnes, Margery, or Mary; the Emery genealogy published in 1890 contains many errors and assertions that cannot be verified by records from the time period. There is no proof based on original source/primary records that it was Agnes Northend or that any Northend family lived in Hampshire.

Find A Grave and U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 are compiled sources containing speculation and outright incorrect data based on other individual compiled family trees; they cannot be trusted.

The earliest Parish Register in these Archives for this church starts from 1638 instead of 1530 when Parish Records were first ordered to be kept.

this is because the Reverend Ezekiel Rogers stole the 1st Register and took it to Massachusetts on the ship 'John of London' in 1638. It was subsequently

lost when his house burned down

Fortunately each Yorkshire church had to send a report each year to the Archbishop of York. These reports were called 'Bishop's Transcripts',

in effect they were a copy of the year's entries in the Parish Registers.

I have read these original Transcripts and John Emery, did marry Agness (with two ss's) Northend in St Peter's Church on the 22nd of

   October, 1597

Agness's parents were John Northend (1558) & Alice Oldfield. These were married on 15 Dec 1584 in Halifax Parish Church in WEST YORKSHIRE. This is about 75 miles west of ROWLEY. In 1585 John's father bought the Manor of Little Weighton.
I got most of my other info about the Emery line from this website:

http://phratry.org/people/p000000b.htm#i479 some of which is quite complicated. I have not checked the accuracy of it's contents as I only recorded John Emery as a spouse of my nine times great grandfather Robert Northend's sister Agness

I travelled to Beverley yesterday and spent a pleasant day in 'The Treasure House', the new home of the East Riding Of Yorkshire

County Archives. The Archives were unavailable for several months recently while all the records were moved from the old buildings into this new one

I have not found the record of the marriage of Agnes Northend and John Emery!
I re-checked the earliest Parish Register they have, which is actually the second Register, as Rev. Ezekiel Rogers stole the first one and took it to America with him in 1638. It was subsequently lost when his house burnt down and his library was destroyed
The earliest Bishop's Transcript they have starts in 1604, and is referenced as MF 7/21. Their earlier Transcripts for St Peter's Church at Rowley are not there. I will have to go to the Borthwick Institute in The University Of York to check their originals.

There is still doubt among reasearchers of the emery family as this being the mother of John and Anthony Emery and their siblings -

Below is research that has been presented - it showas how the mother's came cam into being from records and no documentation has been offered to support the name -

Jeane Yigit who re-married was a professional genealogist she researched the Northend's extensively and had hired done also had wills etc. - this as well as other stuff she done was published in the Emery quarterlies done by me - I never saved me a copy as the queries I had in card file, Anthony's section I was doing from the manuscript & I saved the important articles or correspondence so I thought longer have any but anyone who was them yet I would like her article or articles back if possible; to compare to this just found this in a bunch of files sent back to me several years ago - JEB 2006] went to the LDS Library in Salt Lake City (1984) this summer. She found some entry forms that has caused allot of controversy also some comments of an Elaine Nichols on the sheets.

The Entry sheets total four, the name that appears on the are Donna Moreland 6948 Grunden Dr. Boise, Id. 83705; Stake or mission Boise West Stake; #76156-4007

Now the comments by Elaine Nichols:

The thermo fax copy of the sheet for the above couple shows it was submitted by Donna Anderson. A telephone call to her elicited the information that she had only seen to the sealing work for this couple when she saw by her records that it was not done. She gave me the enclosed pedigree chart and told me that the research had been done by Gladys J. Busby of Mesa, Arizona. (My own pedigree chart is enclosed)

I wrote to Mrs. Busby and while waiting for her reply looked up all the references cited on the family group sheets of the pedigree given me by Sister Anderson. Following are the results:

1) 973.B2z "Americana" Vol. 37 pg. 380 John Emery s/o John and Agnes Emery of Romsey Hants, England 29 Sep. 1698

2) R974.B2ne "New England Historical Genealogical Register" Vol. 89 pg. 376-7 This is a copy of the Emery entries in the Romsey Hants Eng. Parish Register. The register begins in 1596. The Register was searched from 1596-1640. The Emery entries begin in 1594. THERE ARE NO NORTHEND entries listed and no marriages to a Northend. Emery's to the U. S. were two brothers John and Anthony. John settled Newbury, Massachusetts and Anthony at Kittery, Maine. They came 1635

3) B23A.192 "Ancestry & Desc. of James Hinsman Coltman & Betsey Tobey “ complilied by Edith Bartlett Sumner 1957 pg. 66 Emery Family tells of John Emery and his wife Agnes "otherwise unidentified" as the parents of the two immigrants John and Anthony.

4) 929.273 Em 63e "Emery Family from 1590-1890" by Rev. Rufus Emery (1890) These are the desc. of John and Anthony. The Northend name appears on pg. 28 & 54 as Sarah Adams m. Samuel Northend in 1870. John and Anthony are listed as sons of John and Agnes Emery

5) R974.E2F "First Settlers of New England by John Farmer pg. 97 Gives Information on the Emery brother as immigrants. Tells of their children. There is no birth or parentage given for either brother

6) 973.273 B294p "Bassett-Preston Ancestry pg. 99 John Emery of Romsey Hants England md. Agnes [-?-} (someone had penciled in Bailey). It continues to tell of the desc.

7) Mass S7 Vol.1 pg., 153 "Families of Amesbury & Salisbury, Massachuestts" lists the desc. of John and Anthony Emery. No ancestry is given

8) 929.273 M12me "McCall, Tidwell & Allied Families: Ezekiel Northend from Rowley in the East Riding of Yorks. came to America and settled in Rowley, Massachusetts in 1639. 10) 942.74 C4h "Hailfax Antiquarian Soc. 1936" pg. 141-51 "The Shibden Branch of Northend Family" Shibden is part of Northouran, Yorks There is no mention of John Northend marrying an Elizabeth or of the correct age.

Parts of Sister Busby's letter dated 14 Jun. 1965 follows: "I hardly know where to start explaining about the Emery Family. First - it is not my line, I am in no way related or connected to it. I did the copy work, submitting it to clear, and as such for the Samuel Joseph Johnson family... He has been dead several years, and I am no longer actively engaged doing their work. In fact I do not even have their books any more so I can only refer to notes on them. First - I had the Emery record by Ronery (I believe it is spelled that way)... I borrowed mine through the membership I have in Boston in the New Eng. Hist. Gen. Soc.....

Emery Material in NEGHS Loan Cataloge as of Aug. 1990: § Four Generations of John & Anthony Emery § Annual Reunion Address 1887 ect. § D'Amerie-Emery-Amory reprint from NEHGS Register § Gen. Rec. of Desc, of John & Anthony Emery 1890 Rufus Emery § Biography of Matthew Gault Emery by Wm. V. Z. Cox Emery § Conrad Emery and his Desc. (1976) F. Emery German Branch § Revised Gen Records of John Emery (1982) J. Burns There could be more that's not loaned out

I have always had questions concerning the two identical Northend connections - This same line is also on the Shapley pedigree. I also do their research (as I do for about 30 families). Their record cites: Agnes as dau. of Ezekiel Northend and Edna Halstead. The reference given here is the "Emery Family" by R. Emery pg. 1-4. [note that the Emery bk. of 1890 does not state Agnes' last name nor her parents! JEB]. I do not know who did that research - as it was passed on to me. Ezekiel Northend is given as a s/o John and Elizabeth Northend of Hants., Eng. Here is noted: Americana Vol. 37 pg. 380. I do not have access to it here but maybe you do there and can check. If it is different in what you fine in the Archives, I'm afraid it had been searched out by someone else, passed on, etc... Then I wrote to Mrs. Bertha Lee Hemstead Benn, now deceased, who was editor of the weekly genealogical page in the Hartford Times (Ct.). She confirmed what I had said she had put in a good many years searching on the Northend-Emery record, but could not even be sure of what she had as it was copied from others.... I'm sorry that have not been able to help you, but I no longer have the Johnson Family records.

It is clear from her letter what her sources have been and from my previous page of material ( particularly #1 & 2) what is found in them. They do not say what she has been lead to believe.

Upon reading her letter I hired a genealogist recommended by the NEGHS, a Mr. LeBaron Carleton COt of Boston, who as a member of their society, has access to heir books. I asked him to copy for me any Northend entries in the "Emery Genealogy" by Roney. Part of his reply states "In your letter of 4 Feb. you mentioned "An Emery Genealogy by a person named Roney" but three searches fail to reveal any Emery Genealogy with an author named Roney. It is not in the master index, and not in the Emery Cards, in the Genealogies index. It is not in the Newberry index."

I conclude that someone has made an error in giving the name Northend to Agnes wife of John Emery and that the error has been perpetuated because no one has ever checked on it. How Ezekiel Northend and Edna Halstead became Agnes's parents is beyond me. However, having settled on Ezekiel, parentage for him was supplied by giving him the parents of Ezekiel Northend b. 1622 and ignoring dates and places.

I believe that the sheet of John Northend b. abt. 1518 of Romsey, Hants, Eng. and Mrs. Elizabeth Northend b. abt. 1522 is a sheet of non-existent people.

Certainly they are not the John Northend b. abt. 1580 of Weston, Rowley, Yorks, End. and Elizabeth Cole b. abt. 1584 of Hull, Yorks, Eng.

What book Mrs. Busby used I cannot imagine, either.

I will be glad to come and talk with you about this need be. - Elaine C. Nichols

2nd letter dated 23 Mar. 1984 - Dear Mrs Yigit, Thank you for your letter of 8 Mar.

I was in Devizes Central Library yesterday to see if they had anything in print that could provide information on Whiteparish, and managed to find some that may be of interest to you. I will type it out hereunder, so that you can go through it yourself to see if there is anything you don't already know.

Besides the Mormon micro-fiches, there was also the Phillimore Marriage Index, and both have the entry of John Emery & Alice Grantham, 1620. There do not appear to have been too many of them in Wiltshire. Beside Emorye or Emery, there is also, Emerly, Emley, and Emily as well as Embery. The parish register of White parishes starts in 1560 and I should think they have wither the original PR's or the BT's in Trowbridge County Record Office, and will check them when I get the opportunity. This I am afraid won't be for, at least, another month as I am about to go on holiday.

Besides Whiteparish, there are the Parishes of Branshaw and Lanford (to the south of White parish), where there were Emery's who would appear to be related to one another. As these parishes are on the border the Hampshire, the Emery's must have spilled over" the border. For any material (Records) of Hampshire (abbreviation: Hants) I would have to go to Winchester, where the County Record Office and Central Library is. I could find nothing on Romsey, therefore.

Most counties have their "Victoria History" volumes, which they have started to compile many years ago, and are still working on. If the area in which Romsey lies has already been dealt with, then you can expect to find an almost complete history and description of Romsey in one of the volumes. It might be worth your while, therefore, to try to find out if any of the libraries in America keep these series. Oxford University Press are the ones who print them, and I know they are also in New York. I had a look at Wiltshire Victoria History collection, but apparently they have not done Whiteparish yet. It is mentioned and is close to and area called the Downton Hundre, which is described in great detail in Volume XI (pg. 19-103), which was published in 1980.

The surname Bodwell seems rare, and noticed there is only one on the micro-fiche (in the parish of Melksham near Chippenham in N.W. Wiltshire). I will keep my eyes open and make note if I come across another. I don't know whether there are any Wiltshire Corner's Bills, either printed or kept at the C.R.C., ...... [this part seems to deal with another family not Emery's or Bodwells]... I will write to you when I have managed to find out anything more from the records of Whiteparish and or neighboring parishes. Best Wishes! ?????? [he/she signed long hand and I can't make head or tails of it!]
