Aspen Grove Cemetery is operated by the Aspen Grove Cemetery Association, a non-profit organization established by an act of the Iowa Territorial Legislature in December of 1843, three years before Iowa became a state. The first burial was in 1844.
The cemetery has sections that exemplify the major trends in cemetery and monument design over the past 175 years.
There are several dozen documented burials of individuals who died before establishment of this cemetery. Many of those were were transferred from the old Burlington Burial Ground/Smith Cemetery when it was condemned and closed in 1852.
The cemetery currently has about 133 acres with over 40,000 documented burials. It is believed that there are thousands of additional undocumented burials.
The cemetery is located on 2043 Sunnyside Avenue, Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa.
