The purpose of this project is to document the maternal lineage of all people in the mtDNA haplogroup currently designated B2a. This is a subgroup of mtDNA haplogroup B4'5.

Defining Mutations

  • HVR mutations 16111, 16483

Origin

Its parent group, haplogroup B is believed to have arisen in Asia some 50,000 years age. In his popular book The Seven Daughters of Eve, Bryan Sykes named the originator of this mtDNA haplogroup Ina.

Distribution

Parent group B2 is one of five haplogroups found in the indigenous peoples of the Americas, the others being A, C, D, and X. An ancestor of the group probably crossed the Bering Strait about 12,000 years ago. It is most common today among Native Americans of the U.S. Southwest and northern Mexico
