21 October 1899 The British having just won the Battle of Talana on 20 October 1899 were not expecting any more trouble from the Boers. However a cavalry force led by General French encountered the Johannesburg Commando under Kommandant Kock just north of Ladysmith.

The British rushed reinforcements by train to the scene and attacked the Boers who were encamped behind a horseshoe-shaped ring of hills near Elandslaagte station. Under heavy fire the British infantry assaulted the Boer army and drove them off the crest of the hills.

In their attempt to escape on their ponies which were on the reverse slope of the hills the Boers suffered heavy casualties by an unexpected charge by the 5th Lancers.

Sir George White received incorrect information to the effect that a vastly superior force of Boers under General Joubert was fast approaching and gave an order to fall back on Ladysmith, thereby nullifying their victory.

This set the scene for the siege of Ladysmith which began shortly afterwards.

Include in the "About Me" section of each person a brief biographical sketch of their lives. Also include their Settler party and ship name and arrival date if known Include a photograph/painting of your ancestor if one exists. Your ancestor's profiles should be marked as "public" and not "private". All included profiles should include full identifying information including birth and death dates as well as birth and death locations. It would also be very helpful if the immediate family of your pioneer ancestor, (their parents, siblings and children) profiles were public profiles also. Do not make public any profiles of living people. NOTE: All POW included on this project will have their profiles editable by other collaborators of this project. The object of reproducing the list here is to see if these people can be located on Geni and perhaps develop trees from them. To take part in any project - you do need to first be a collaborator - so join the project. See the discussion Project Help: How to add Text to a Project - Starter Kit to get you going!
