Butte County was named from the numerous buttes which rise abruptly from the prairies in the area. The county seat is in Belle Fourche, which is also known as the "Center of the Nation." The county was established in the state of South Dakota on March 2, 1883. The name Belle Fourche came from the French explorers and means "beautiful fork."
