Wikipedia

The county is named for The Chariton River

The river is perhaps named after Chariton the Confessor, a Christian saint or for a man named Joseph Chorette, who drowned while swimming in the river. Chorette, with varied spellings, accompanied Jean Baptiste Trudeau on his expedition up the Missouri River in 1795.
