Profiles

Located within the city of Fairfield, Evergreen Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Jefferson County. Since 1870, when the cemetery opened, there have been more than 11,000 burials here. The complete listing for this cemetery is now online, and will be kept up to date as new burials occur. Information on burials comes from various sources, including local genealogist Verda Baird's printed listings (1870 - 1990, and 1991 - 2004), local obituaries, the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project, the Works Projects Administration graves survey from 1940, "Jefferson County Records" by Mary and Orville Prill, and postings on the Jefferson County message boards as well as those from the counties surrounding us. Verda's printed listings of the cemetery's burials from 1870 through 2004 are available on the shelves of the Fairfield Library. If you would like more information on a particular burial, please see our Lookups page for assistance.

Evergreen Cemetery is located directly adjacent to the Old Fairfield Cemetery at 'B' and Stone Streets, and there is no fence to separate them. There is merely a sign at the entrance indicating Old Fairfield is to the left (west) and Evergreen to the right (east). Because there is no fence, the two cemeteries have occasionally been considered as one, and their names used interchangably. In reality they are two entirely separate entities. The First Addition of Evergreen Cemetery lies to the north of Old Fairfield; the original old plat lies to the east, and several more Additions to Evergreen are further east. Old Fairfield's burials ended in 1995 while Evergreen's still continue.
