Officers of the Order

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Order of the Golden Fleece was (and is) run by a formal 'administration'. This is comprised of the four following functions (in order of importance):

  • The Chancellor (le Chancellier) - Usually a high-ranking cleric. He holds the 'common seal' of the order and presides over the selection and election of candidate knights. He also edits the Order's accounts and acts as a spokesman for the Grand Master during his absence.
  • The Treasurer (le Trésorier) - The Treasurer controls the funds of the Order, and holds and supervises all records related to its privileges - including the Order's treasures and archives (jewels, vestments, library, art, mantles...)
  • The Registrar (le Greffier) - The Registrar keeps the Order's statutes and documentary records. This includes the proceedings of the Chapters and elections, as well as the "laudable and honorable" deeds of the Knights.
  • The King-of-Arms (le Roi d'Armes) - This function is responsible for collecting information concerning the deeds of the knights and, as chief heraldic officer, examines their proof of nobility and arms (this function has been abandoned in the Spanish branch, since 1931).

The Austrian branch has an additional function, the Almoner - a bishop who assists the Chancellor.

Note: The information is captured from old manuscripts in French. When we have identified an Officer on Geni, we will have scrutinized his name and titles function of his genealogical and geographical origins. This is highlighted in bold blue, which links directly to the Officer's Geni profile. The other profiles are a work-in-progress.
