Wikipedia

The land for Holy Cross Cemetery was purchased from James and Mary Duffy, a portion of the old Van Brunt farm in the town of Flatbush in June of 1849. The first burial took place on July 13, 1849. The Chapel of the Resurrection was built in 1855. In the catacombs beneath the Chapel are interred some of the pioneer priests of the diocese and in the sections near the Chapel can be found the graves of some of Brooklyn's oldest Catholic families. Subsequent land purchases enlarged Holy Cross Cemetery to a total of ninety-six acres.
