Humphreys County was established in 1809 and was named for, Judge and future Congressman, Parry Wayne Humphreys.
During the Civil War, the Battle of Johnsonville was fought in the western half of the county in late 1864. The remnants of the battle site are the focus of Johnsonville State Historic Park, though much of the battlefield has been submerged by dams on the Tennessee River creating Kentucky Lake.
