Profiles

For people who have tested and are assigned the maternal haplogroup I4 or who are believed to have had that maternal haplogroup based on descendants tested.

Defining Mutations

  • Coding mutations 8519 and 10819

Origin

Haplogroup I4' parent group, Haplogroup I, has an estimated age of 30 thousand years. Its ancestral haplogroup was N1. Bonnie Schrack named this mtDNA haplogroup Iris.

Haplogroup I might have originated on the Pontic-Caspian steppes.

Distribution

I4 is nearly absent in the parts of Europe most distant from that area. Today it is most common among the Lemkos in the Carpathian mountains (11.3%), the people of Krk Island (Croatia) (also 11.3 percent), and among Russians from Oryol Oblast (8.3 percent)

Haplogroup I was probably present in the populations that first colonized Europe. It is most common in Norway, southern Finland, Ukraine, Greece and western Anatolia, where it includes more than 5 percent of the population. It seems to have been even more common in the medieval era. Tests on ancient Danish samples suggest it once included 13 percent of the population there.
