Jefferson County was founded on 26 January 1856, and its governing structure was organized in 1864. It was named for Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States.
Rock Creek Station was a stage and Pony Express station established in 1857, on the Oregon & California Trails, that become notorious one fateful day in 1861. On that July afternoon, James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok killed David McCanles there and began his bloody career as a gunfighter.
