Jews were in Maribor in the 13th century. A synagogue built sometime in late 13th century survives as a museum under the name of the Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor. Emperor Maximilian I expelled them by 6 January 1497.
Although Jews began to return during the 19th and 20th centuries, they did not form a Jewish community and did not have a synagogue. Today very few Jews live in Maribor.
The vital records of the Jews of Maribor prior to 1918 were among those of the Jewish Community of Graz.
