In early January 1945, the German Einsatzkommando and members of the Slovak pro-Nazi Hlinka Guard Storm Troops murdered hundreds of people in a lime kiln in the village of Nemecká, about 25 km northeast of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. Most of the victims were Jewish citizens born in Czechoslovakia, Austria and Hungary. The murdered were supposed to vanish without a trace, as if they had never existed. It was impossible to identify them, as only personal items that were not completely destroyed by fire were left behind. Even today, we don’t know about their fate. There was no interest in investigating and uncovering the facts. Perhaps it was because the Hlinka Guards were more involved than was originally reported.

The lime kiln in Nemecká is known as the 47th oven of Auschwitz. Despite the fact that a horrible massacre took place there, the events associated with it have been inadequately examined and remain shrouded in mystery.

The Project

Dušan Hudec, a film director and scriptwriter, is seeking cooperation of relatives of victims and genealogists around the world to aid in collecting information for a documentary film and an exhibition of photographs and archival documents. He focuses on controversial issues, themes that are considered taboo, and the fate of people who have undergone traumatic life situations.

To help, please request to join this project and help to build the family trees of the victims in an effort to understand their history and, where possible, connect the victims to branches of their families who survived.

Hudec also hopes that this effort can help improve the accuracy of the list of those murdered in Nemecká and those researchers have noted as murdered in Kremnička, 30 km to the southwest.

The film will be a docudrama, a reconstruction of the fates of the persecuted families and their executioners. We will follow the stories of several individuals, as they hide in the mountains and deserted houses which were raided by the Hlinka Guard Storm Troops and Germans, their struggle for survival and ultimately their capture, often with the help of local informers. The victims’ relatives from EU, Israel and the United States will search for information on their capture and imprisonment. They decided to come to Slovakia and return to the place where their families hid. They will seek out the last remaining witnesses who might be able to help them to find out what actually happened before they were taken by the Hlinka Guards and the Germans.

The Murders and Aftermath

The first group was taken to the kiln on January 4, 1945. The Germans began the killing, but gradually the Hlinka Guards got involved and took over. The space around the kiln was surrounded and protected by machine guns. The victims were ordered to turn over all material possessions and to undress down to their underwear. After being shoved to the edge of the kiln and forced to kneel, they were shot in the back of the head and fell into the flames of the boiling lime. In some cases, even the living were thrown into the fire. The fire was continually tended by the Hlinka Guard and the locals thought that they were burning lime. In order to avoid attracting attention, they added tar to the fire to neutralize the smell of burning flesh. The ash and unburnt bones were dumped in the Hron River. They wanted to completely cover up their acts and prevent the victims from being identified. Day and night for seven days they shot and burned the victims. The Guards typically killed entire families, including women and children; they didn’t want to allow a family member to survive who might later avenge the deaths. The exact number of victims is impossible to determine. It is estimated that from 500 to 900 people died in the flames. Despite their best efforts to cover the traces of their crimes, the people living nearby heard the heartrending screams of the women and children coming from the direction of the kiln. The Guards then went to nearby villages like door to door salesmen and sold the clothing, watches and others items that they had stolen from the victims. Even the families of the Guards didn’t know about it. When the soldiers returned home, they went to church (many were Catholics and as members of the Hlinka Guard they were served by the priests who were supposed to look after their spiritual well-being.) Some even absolved the soldiers of their sins because they were fighting “enemies of the faith and the Slovak State.” In 1958, a trial was held for 15 Guards who had participated in the murders. Five were sentenced to death and the others were given long prison sentences. They were just doing the dirty work of their commanding officers, most of whom fled to Argentina with their looted gold and jewelry.

The story of the men, women and children who were murdered in Nemecká will be a model situation for uncovering the entire mechanism, the system of persecution and repression, the background and reasons for the hate, as well as the role of the Church and its priests.

Known Executions in a lime kiln in Nemecka

A list of the people executed in a lime kiln in Nemecka follows, from names registered in the prison book in Banska Bystrica. It is assumed that these persons were executed in Nemecka as they were “released“ from prison between January 4-11, 1945.

Lines between the victims in the list, based on date of imprisonment may indicate family groups.

The list contains the Name, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, Residency, Place and Date of Imprisonment.
