The Mantua area of Greene County, Alabama was home to settlers who migrated together from the Newberry and Spartanburg Districts of western South Carolina in the early 1820s. Lying along the Sipsey River, Mantua Precinct, or Mantua Beat, was added to Greene Co. from Pickens County in 1867 (when precincts further east in Greene County split off to become Hale County). This means that census-searching has to involve (for 1860, 1850, and earlier censuses) the "Pickens County-Southern District" (which is bigger than just Mantua Beat). Given the connection to Pickens Co., an important source for researchers is Records of Pickens County, Vol. I, in GoogleBooks (searchable indexes).
"Original settlers of Mantua had come from Spartanburg, South Carolina with William N. Morrow circa 1817. And, according to Records of Pickens County, the original name of Mantua/Montua was actually Lavender, probably named after this family." --Judy Jacobson, Alabama and Mississippi Connections, Historical and Biographical Sketches of Families Who Settled on Both Sides of the Tombigbee River (1999), p. 132.
Census searching is most readily done at FamilySearch.org.
In the 1830 and 1840 censuses (Pickens), only head-of-household names appear, no family members.
In 1850, there were two censuses:
- "Free Inhabitants". Mantua area is in "Pickens County, part of" on Film #442864. Images are readable at United States Census, 1850 Alabama Pickens, Pickens county, part of. There was a sub-section to this census -- the U.S. Census 1850 Mortality Schedules -- which FamilySearch does not make available online, although Ancestry.com does; see below.
- "Slave Schedule". The names of slave-holding planters/farmers (only) in the Southern District of Pickens County appear on Film #442874. Images for the Southern District are readable starting at United States Census (Slave Schedule), 1850 Alabama Pickens starting with #8. Unfortunately the names of the African-Americans being counted do not appear. But names do appear in many Greene County Estate files, archived at Eutaw, Greene County; here is a sample. (Pickens County records were all lost in a courthouse fire at Carrollton, but records from Mantua Beat were not filed there.)
The 1858 Snedecor's Map of Greene County is worth a close look at property owners' names.
In 1860, the area is called "Southern Division, Pickens, Alabama," and appears on Film #803020. Enter "Southern Division, Pickens, Alabama" under Residence Place.
The 1870 US Census for Mantua Beat is a goldmine for genealogists since, for the first time, black residents are listed by name. It is searchable via Film #000545516, although the film contains much more than just Mantua Beat.
In 1881 Louis Anders Lavender was postmaster at Mantua Post Office.
The Diary of Dr. William Patton 1794*-1872 is a key resources about Greene County, Ala. people and events, including much terrible weather and many epidemics. (*The title page misstates WP's year of birth.)
Hebron Presbyterian Church, Mantua, Ala., formally organized in 1824 when Reverend Thomas Archibald settled in the area, was a ruin by 1918, officially dissolved in 1931, and is now gone. In 1856 Hebron had 244 members making it the largest Presbyterian church in the area. After the War Between the States, the population declined and per J. Taylor's transcribed Hebron Church Minutes, "the building became neglected and finally collapsed in 1918." The church was dissolved by the Tuscaloosa Presbytery in 1931. Hebron Presbyterian had 273 burials recorded as of Oct. 2007. The church recorded Minutes after 1867.
Business and finance in the early years. "The manner of travel to distant points was either on horseback, in buggies or by stage coach. The merchants frequently rode horseback to New York and Philadelphia to purchase their stocks of goods, which they had shipped to Mobile by water, thence to Cahaba, from which latter place the goods were hauled in wagons to Greensboro. The financial crisis of 1825 was severely felt in [the county] and from 1825 to 1828 there were many bankruptcies ... then there came a lull till the fearful crisis of 1837, when the ... the whole nation nearly became bankrupt... until 1842-43. During the period succeeding the bursting of the bubble [t]housands upon thousands of acres of land in this section went under the hammer of the auctioneer when settlement day came after the fictitious fortunes that had been accumulated on a mere promise to pay had been swept away by one stroke of Old Hickory Jackson's pen. The wreck and ruin that strewed the financial pathway of that period served as danger signals for many long years: it does not pay, in the long run, for a person to become rich on credit." --From A History of Greensboro, Greene County, Alabama.

In about 1890 the Mantua Academy was established. It is described in the Eutaw Whig & Observer:
Our people have recently erected a comfortable and commodious Academy, and given it the name Mantua Academy. We have procured the service of Professor J. L. Smith as principal. Professor Smith comes to us from Hale County. He is a graduate of the state Normal College of Alabama at Florence. We have a very flattering school and still it grows. We predict a bright future for our educational resources, as Professor Smith is a high-toned Christian gentleman of find scholarly ability and an experience of eight years in the school room as an educator. He is up on all the Normal Methods, and we think no one could do better than send their boys or young ladies to Mantua for a thorough education. --Eutaw Whig & Observer, December 18, 1890, p. 3

Mantua today. The still-occupied house of William Nelson Morrow, along with the old General Store / Post Office (see in Photos) are among the few buildings at the crossroads that officially marks Mantua on a current map.
The Greene & Pickens Black Families Association website features old photographs of members of longstanding families in the area.
=====================================================================================================
Some of the earliest settlers of the Mantua area were creditors at the store of Robert Morrow, brother of William Nelson Morrow and three other Greene County siblings. Although the precise location of this store is not identified among the papers of Robert Morrow's estate, the listed creditors at the time of his death in 1820 included many men who lived in the Mantua vicinity. These names, which include McCracken, Morrow, Storey, White, Archibald, McGiffert, Coward, Chambers and many others, are in Image 39-43 in the Estate of Robert Morrow (FamilySearch.org)

She died 1851-53 and Guardians were appointed for her 4 children's inheritance from Benjamin Love. Rest of the file shows that Benjamin Love was Captain in Anderson's Militia, Georgia, in the War of 1812 and received a Land Bounty. File also reflects her brother John Love's Guardianship of the Robert Gammill heirs (see also in John Love 1843 Estate); and contains the 1822 Estate Appraisal for John H. Love (doubtless an uncle) -- misfiled.

Some Greene County Estate documents evidencing ownership or sale of individuals as property:
- Estate of James Storey (1826), one man, Joe. But in January 1827 a separate list of slaves was filed by Margaret Storey in connection with this Estate. Several individuals were received by [Robert Storey, Henry Storey and William Morrow, also in 1827. Evidently James Storey had left a Will, and these actions were directed in it, but the document is not in the online file..
- Estate of James Daniel (1831), leaves several individuals to his children. A List of the slaves' names as of 1835 was attested to and filed in that year: Susan, Nann, Polly, Starlin, Lewis, Nance, Lily, Jacob, George, Sarah. An actual appraisal document appears as well.
- Estate of John McCracken (1835), Inventory, Image 53 of 98: 10 individuals: Negro men Ben and Abram; women Lucy and Anaka; boys Harry and Ben; girls Nervy and Hannah and one girl along with "the child in her arms." The Sale proceeds list is on Image 66, same online file, and includes these individuals.
- Will of Samuel Otterson (1838) designates his slaves to members of his family, except one who is to be sold. Their names are: Tena, Luce, Joseph, Chaney, Jane, Ephraim, William, Vice, Flemmen, Derry, Sindy, Sampson, Jeremiah, Sarah, Mary, Pleasant, James, Hannah, Cele, Meriah, Robert, Eliza. The person to be sold was Washington (Sec. 18 of the Will). Interestingly, Samuel also specifies that "any property owned by my Negroes...be appropriated to their individual use" (Sec. 17).
- Appraisement, Estate of Anthony McCracken (1840), Greene Co. Estate files image 32 of 57. Also Sale of property of Anthony McCracken (1839), Greene Co. Estate files image 38/57.
- Estate of Samuel O. Spencer (1844 affidavit re hiring-out of slaves): Individuals hired out (mainly to the Spencer children's guardian, Thos. Tyree) included Bob, Susan + 3 children, Mary, Henry, Sarah, Ben, and Jenny/Jiney (hired out to W.W. Storey). The same enslaved people appear in the Estate of Samuel Spencer's daughter, Louisa C. Spencer (died Aug 8, 1847; probated in 1847) Louisa's Estate includes Susan + 2 children. Sarah is no longer listed. The group were sold at Eutaw to local planters (Cochran, Chambers, Burchett) and to Thos. Tyree, Admin. of both Spencer parents' Estates (Thos. Tyree later married Samuel Spencer's widow). The Spencer children were of school age and still under Tyree's guardianship in 1847. See also Wm. Milton Spencer, below (1858).
- Estate of William Montford (1847), named 5 enslaved people on Image 599 of 1844 (and on #598): a woman and four children.
- Estate of Emri / Imri McCracken (1847), named one enslaved woman, Mary, who was purchased by Emri's widow, Mary McCracken, for $500. Emri died insolvent, with "30 acres of real estate not subject to sale."
- Estate of Nicia Lavender 1852) widow of Bryant; they lived in neighboring Sumter County also; they grew cotton and shipped it to Mobile. Estate cover page mentions ten slaves by name: 2 are Man & Woman; 7 are Boy / Girl; 1 is Child (probably "infant"). The ten individuals are appraised and divided among Nicia's six children in December 1854.
- Estate of Peter H. Hamilton (1854): India and her children Hager and Jane, to William S. Price (top of page).
- Appraisement, Estate of Samuel Morrow d. 1857, Greene Co. Estate files image 9/112 and Sale of property, 1857, Greene Co. Estate files image 5 of 112
- Appraisement, Estate of Margaret McCracken c. 1768-c.1862, of Harry ($300), about 55 years old in c. 1853. A document seeking to invalidate the Note given for cash to pay for purchase of a man "about 60 yrs old" from the Margaret McCracken Estate was filed in April 1863 -- after "certain proclamations by the President of the United States" [which occurred in January 1863]. The original Bill of Sale for Harry was dated April 18, 1863.
- Sale of property of a different Margaret McCracken (1852), mentioning 8 individuals
- Estate Sale of William Milton Spencer (Oct 1858): Robert (17) to W.M. Spencer's brother A.H.H. Spencer; Henry (15) to B.F. Higginbotham.
- Estate Appraisement of Francis Colvin (1862), mentioning 11 individuals. Francis Colvin's Will bequeathed relevant family groups to sisters of his, again listing the individuals by name.
- Appraisement, Estate of John C. McCracken (1863), mentioning 17 individuals
- Inventory & Appraisement, Estate of Bryant Lavender (son of Bryant) (1864), mentioning 4 individuals who evidently came from his mother's 1853 Estate.
- Will of William Kennedy (Probate 1857), made 1848. Mentions 7 men (gifts of money) + 2 boys on previous image.
- Estate of Samuel Chambers (1856): heirs & land mentioned on Image 56 of 130; "five slaves: 2 men, 2 women, and a girl" on Image 57. They are listed on Image 63 in the file as Reuben, Maria, Pegga, Mary and Henry.
- Estate appraisal of John S. White shows he owned "one-half interest in Gilmore, George and Jerry."

On Robert (Rob) Brown of Mantua, his early education there, and later career as Greene County's Superintendent of Schools: The Civil Rights Work of Robert Brown, Alabama's First Black School Superintendent" (Greene County). Mr. Brown's parents were Charlie Brown and Minnie Colvin, married in 1928 in Greene County. Charlie Brown's parents, Charley (1870-1903) and Emma [Lavender] Brown (1875-1955), had worked land owned by Frank Irwin Eatman in Mantua. "Charley Brown had died young, leaving Emma with four children to bring up. For 50 years she operated their farm with her own labor and that of her children, who included Charner, Charlie, and Webster. In the 1930s, Rob knew his grandmother well, as he and his older brother, Roosevelt, lived with her. Emma was literate and subscribed to the Pittsburg Courier which, with its southern edition, was the most widely-circulated black weekly of the era. In addition to sports, serialized novels and short stories, its editorial policy and news coverage was anti-Jim Crow and pro-union....Looking back, Brown believes Eatman was as trapped in the dysfunctional economy as the tenants. In 1940 the value of Eatman's land, at $3,000, was less than that [when] owned by his grandmother 80 years earlier. The long decline in the Greene County population was related to the dysfunctional economy. Both races were forced out of Mantua by the need to find employment. In the antebellum the proportion of blacks in Greene County was eighty percent. It remained the same in the 2010 census."

The streams is vary crooked with low flat bottoms, which usually hold abundant water. The next previlent desease is that of Chills and Fever. The cause of this desease can be easily assigned from the above description of the water corse.
