The Medal of Valor (Hebrew: עיטור הגבורה) is the highest Israeli military decoration.

The medal was established in 1970 by the Knesset in an act of law as a replacement for the Hero of Israel military decoration that was awarded during the 1947-48 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine and the 1948 War of Independence.. Awards of the medal were also made for actions prior to 1970, and all recipients of the Hero of Israel automatically received the Medal of Valor as well.
Design
The medal was designed by Dan Reisinger in the shape of a Star of David. A sword and olive branch decorate the left side, while the reverse is plain. The medal is attached to a yellow ribbon, a reference to the yellow star that Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust. Two time recipients of the medal attach a small medal-shaped clasp to the ribbon.

To this day (2022), 40 MoV medals have been awarded: 12 for actions in the War of Independence (Hero of Israel recipients automatically received the Medal of Valor), four for the Sinai War, 12 for the Six-Day War, one for the War of Attrition, eight for the Yom Kippur War, and three others for actions during specific operations.

עיטור הגבורה הוא העיטור הגבוה ביותר שניתן בצה"ל. העיטור מוענק על ידי שר הביטחון בהמלצת הרמטכ"ל, על "מעשה גבורה עילאית שנעשה בעת לחימה מול פני האויב תוך חירוף נפש".
בינואר 1970 אישרה הכנסת את חוק העיטורים בצבא הגנה לישראל, שקבע את שלושת העיטורים הגבוהים ביותר עבור גילויי אומץ וגבורה במהלך לחימה - עיטור הגבורה, עיטור העוז ועיטור המופת. עיטורים אלה הוענקו למפרע גם לכל המעוטרים מאז קום המדינה, כאשר ועדה קבעה איזה עיטור חדש יחליף עיטור ישן. בנוסף, המיר החוק את "אות גיבור ישראל", שבו זכו 12 לוחמים במלחמת העצמאות, לעיטור הגבורה. החוק קבע כי מתן עיטורי המופת והעוז הוא בסמכותו של הרמטכ"ל, ואילו הענקת עיטור הגבורה היא בסמכות שר הביטחון, בהמלצת הרמטכ"ל.

עד שנת 1975 הוענקו 40 עיטורי הגבורה. כאמור, העיטור מוענק לעיתים נדירות ועל מעשי גבורה יוצאי דופן; מספר המעוטרים בעיטור הגבורה מהווה פחות מ-5% מכלל מקבלי העיטורים (סה"כ עוטרו 864 חיילים וקצינים בעיטורי הגבורה, העוז והמופת), ופחות מ-2% מכלל מקבלי העיטורים והצל"שים ברמותיהם השונות (צל"ש רמטכ"ל, צל"ש אלוף, צל"ש מפקד אוגדה וצל"ש מח"ט).
