This project is for those who are buried in Oaklands Cemetery, West Goshen Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.
Oaklands Cemetery was founded as a "rural cemetery" in 1854 just outside of the Borough of West Chester, Pennsylvania, as a response to mandated closure and removal of graveyards within the borough of West Chester in 1851. Land was purchased from Joseph L. Taylor located a mile and a half north of West Chester, adjoining that of the newly-planned Saint Agnes Roman Catholic Cemetery, to become the cemetery. Roads were laid, a small lake was created, and a receiving vault, superintendent's cottage and gateway were built for the new cemetery.
Many burials from West Chester's former Episcopal, Baptist, and Presbyterian burial grounds were removed to Oaklands in the 1850s and early 1860s, as were many Quaker burials from the former High Street Friends Burial Ground in the 1880s.
