Harmony Methodist Church celebrated its 200th anniversary on October 19, making it the oldest Methodist church in the Jane Lew area. The Weston Democrat reported in 1876 that the church was built in November 1819 “Of large hewn logs, in which yet are benches made of split saplings 56 years and 8 months ago. Although it has been improved, yet it still stands as a monument of old-time architecture.”

Today a new structure stands on the sight, and the small church is part of the Lewis Charge, which now consists of only two churches, Harmony and Berlin United Methodist Church. Reverend Roger McKee has been pastor of the Lewis Charge for 33 years.

“May the years coming see this church grow. Thank you for those who established the church and those who have sustained it,” McKee told the congregation in his benediction.

Harmony has a long list of pastors that have served the church, beginning with John Mitchell in 1819. Between 1819 and 1829 congregants met in homes to worship. Mitchell and David Smith organized the church in October of 1829. In 1880, a new church was built, and that is the building that stands today.

A letter to the editor of The Weston Democrat dated May 29, 1880 stated that the new church was neat and “sufficiently commodious for the people of the rich and populous Hacker’s Creek Valley...” In the same letter, it is mentioned that members raised $287 to erase the debt of the church.
