The scarcity of pictorial relics in Portugal before the fifteenth century led to the formation of a belief that in this country painting flourished only from the Renaissance, but the absence of concrete examples does not mean that local societies of remote times, precursor of formation From the current Portuguese state, they do not practice this art and, contrary to what is usually supposed, Portugal's painting has an ancient tradition. Unfortunately, by different circumstances, most of the works produced until mid-gothic period has disappeared, and the few that survive are therefore of extraordinary preciousness, being the only testimonies of an artistic lineage dating from prehistory. From the Renaissance, in fact, coinciding with the phase of the discoveries and the establishment of various colonies in addition to the sea, the great riches that came to flow to the metropolis served as a powerful stimulus for the intensification of cultural and commercial exchange with the rest of the rest of the Europe and for accelerated and important development in all arts, logically benefiting the painting of this new context. Since then the history of painting in Portugal is much better documented, and its works are today in various museums and private national and foreign collections.

A escassez de relíquias pictóricas em Portugal anteriores ao século XV levou à formação de uma crença de que neste país a pintura floresceu somente a partir da Renascença, porém, a ausência de exemplos concretos não significa que as sociedades locais de tempos remotos, precursoras da formação do atual Estado português, não praticassem esta arte e, ao contrário do que usualmente se supõe, a pintura de Portugal tem uma tradição antiquíssima. Infelizmente, por circunstâncias diversas, a maioria das obras produzidas até meados do período Gótico desapareceu, e as poucas que sobrevivem são por isso mesmo de extraordinária preciosidade, sendo os únicos testemunhos de uma linhagem artística que data da Pré-história. A partir do Renascimento, de facto, coincidindo com a fase dos descobrimentos e do estabelecimento de diversas colónias além-mar, as grandes riquezas que passaram a afluir para a metrópole serviram como poderoso estímulo para a intensificação do intercâmbio cultural e comercial com o restante da Europa e para um desenvolvimento acelerado e importante em todas as artes, beneficiando-se logicamente a pintura desse novo contexto. Desde lá a história da pintura em Portugal está muito melhor documentada, e as suas obras conservam-se, hoje, em diversos museus e coleções privadas nacionais e estrangeiras.
