
Phoebe's nickname was "Downey," as she had a daughter also named Pheobe. She was an active member in the Josephine Circle, the Fortnighly Club and the King's Daughters.
Phoebe Rowell happened to be a visitor in the home of one of Memphis' prominent families, the Randolphs. There she met Wassell and they were married on April 3, 1910 in Beaver Dam, Dodge County, Wisconsin. However the newly weds decided to live in Memphis, Tennessee as Wassell was a practicing attorney in his father's office.
