Profiles

This project is dedicated to the 400+ Rabbis who participated in the Rabbi's March on October 6, 1943.

The march was arranged by Hillel Peter Kook (real name: Hillel Kook). It started off in Union Station Washington, DC, then continued to the Capitol, where they were met by Vice-President Henry A. Wallace, 33rd Vice President of the USA. who listened to their plight, then told them that he would do what he could. They then proceeded to Lincoln Memorial, where they said a prayer for Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the USA and sang the national anthem, then continued on to the White House. The Bergson group put on performances, such as "We Will Never Die", to raise funds for their group. A week after their major performance in Madison Square Garden, the Wise group booked it for their anti-Bergson protest. Unfortunately, Roosevelt was in contact with Stephen Wise, a Reform Rabbi, and an anti-Semitic priest, Charles Coughlin, who urged him against it too. In July 2007, relatives of March participants wrote a letter to the United States Holocaust Museum, urging them to put a photo of the Rabbi's March in the permanent exhibit. You can view the letter in the documents section in this project.
