A man named Mathijs became known as the man called

Thys Barentsen Swaim.

His descendants are known by the name SWAIM or SWAIN or SWAN and perhaps some other variations, including Thiessen.

DNA has proven they are NOT the same as the Van Pelts of the same region and timeframe.

Due to naming patterns and repeated usage of some names (such as Moses and John and Cornelius), as well as a litany of other reasons, the Swaim line seems to be in constant need of untangling.

But because of the dedication and HARD work of so many, as well as DNA studies, some branches are absolutely confirmed.

While this is true, it remains a fact that with newcomers to the hobby of genealogy and with the proliferation of unsourced internet trees, it is an ongoing task to keep known lines correct.

So much WORK has been done on the genealogy of the Swaims that landed in "New Amsterdam" in 1661!
Starting with Matthys Barents who arrived aboard the ship St. Jan Baptiste.
He and his family were some of the first European colonists on Staten Island, New Amsterdam (renamed New York when the British assumed authority).
Legend has it that the name is an anacronym for Surname Withheld Against Invading Monarchs but who knows...

This project will serve as a place to park sources and important information for this particular family which has been proven with DNA to not be the same as VanPelt or other family groups of similar name.
