In 1882, the town of Auburn was created by the union of two small towns: Sheridan to the north and Calvert to the south. Sheridan's town cemetery retained its name even after this consolidation. Its first burial was 8-year-old, sunstroke victim, Loda Long in 1858. At that time, she was buried in what would remain a family-only cemetery for 20 years. After that, her family donated the plot (Long's Reserve) and adjacent acreage to become the beginning of the current Sheridan Cemetery. It remains an active cemetery with approximately 8,000 burials.
Sheridan Cemetery sits on a hill with steep drops on 3 sides with the 4th side bounded by city street F. By 1956, all contiguous land suitable for use had been added to it. In 1972, the cemetery association bought 15 acres approximately .5 miles west of the original cemetery (Sheridan West).
