Sherman Cemetery is to the north of Wilbur and Creston and has served the area for many years. It's in the NW 1/4 of T27N R33E Sec 24. The cemetery is still very much in use and those records were used in compiling this list. The record holder is Jack Robertson in Wilbur.
Records on file at the Lincoln County Court house show that the cemetery was incorporated in May of 1893 with C.T. Blackfan as it's first president and G.W. Sherman as secretary. The Blackfan baby's burial in 1893 was one of the first burials here. The cemetery originally contained 10.2 acres and is adjacent to the Sherman Church, still used for some events.
"Lincoln Legacy" says that a club was organized as early as 1912 to maintain the cemetery. That history also tells of the town that flourished, bearing the Sherman name.
To reach the Sherman Cemetery, go north from Highway 2, either on Sherman Road which is midway between Wilbur and Creston, or Brace St. in Wilbur. In either case, go about 10 miles north, following the paved road as it meanders through wheat fields to the church and cemetery, on a hill to the west. The cemetery is treed, fenced, and well cared for by the association and it's caretaker. The fence was erected in 1955 by friends of Peter A. Martin.
