SPLGC began life as the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery, and was in Butler County, Pennsylvania, and the oldest burials were residents of that county.
In 1854, Lawrence County was created from parts of Butler, Beaver and Mercer counties. In 1855, Lawrence County created Plain Grove (sometimes Plaingrove) Township. As a result of this, the Butler County Presbyterian congregation began their new church in Slippery Rock, Butler County, Pennsylvania.
The cemetery is also known as Old Plain Grove Cemetery, Original Plain Grove Cemetery and Plain Grove South Cemetery.
