- Douwe Gerbrandt STEYN His adopted son Jacobus is the biological father of this Steyn tribe, which is the largest Steyn tribe in South Africa. Two sons of Jacobus form the two main branches: Hermanus Steyn b1c3 and Jacobus Steyn b1c8.

Resources:
Inviting as many people as possible to collaborate to put as many Steyns as possible on Geni. New profiles are entered using the guidelines found at [http://www.geni.com/projects/South-Africa-Profile-Guidelines/16231]. The best general sources about the STEYN family trees:
1. South African Genealogies (SAG) vol. 12 published 2005. Some confusing errors found on pages 210, 211, 212, 213, 215, 219. All the descendants of Douwe Gerbrandt STEYN have been entered from this source pages 205-236. Thanks to all who collaborated. August 2012.
2. Die families van Ou Swellendam Deel 1 Steyn published 1999. Available from the Drostdy Museum, Swellendam. All of them have been entered on Geni now - Dec 2010. Thank you to everybody who has collaborated.
3. Die Nasate van AFW Steyn en EM Linde published 2009, written by J.W. Jonker. Note: the numbering system used in this book does not follow the standard approach so it could cause some misunderstanding. Available from the Drostdy Museum, Swellendam. All of the STEYNS listed in the book have been entered. Dec 2011. Thanks to all who collaborated.
4. Many Treks Made Rhodesia by S.P. Olivier, published in 1975. It is a translation of 'Die Pioniertrekke n Gazaland' published in 1943. Chapter 11 is about the Henry-Steyn Trek which included six Steyn families. The seventh Steyn family in the book was part of the Martin Trek. Their names are listed in the helpful appendix on page 163.
5. Voortrekkerstamouers 1835-1845 by Jan C. Visagie, published in 2011. The Steyns involved in the Trek are listed on pages 470-479. Wives with the Steyn maiden name are listed on page 727.
At the moment these are the five most reliable general sources of information about the Steyns. Older books have many more mistakes, even up to the level of Jacobus Steyn b1 and his children.
On the SteynPro website there is also a lot of information about the STEYNS. However, the site is not up to date. The Geni information is more reliable.
