The original name of the cemetery had been East Jordan Cemetery. The City Council, in 1921, wanted a more attractive name, and formed a naming committee. The committee coordinated with the town newspaper, East Jordan News Herald, to create a naming contest.
The name Sunset Hill Cemetery was suggested by Mrs. G. W. Kitsman.
The cemetery is located in Charlevoix County.
