The surname ATAL was bestowed upon Dewan Pandit Moti Lal Thullal by Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur about 1865AD.Motilalji was a very learned scholar and was responsible for setting up the Revenue system in Jaipur State and which model was followed by other Rajputana states,. Panditji as he was referred to by the Maharaja depended upon him for advice on matters of state, Panditji was very firm in his opinions and advice so the Maharaja stated that Panditji you are "always ATAL"(FIRM/UNWAVERING) in your opinion and advice to me. Hence the name ATAL was adopted by him and has been so by the family since.ATAL is not a Kashmiri Pandit name and the ATAL family originates from Motilalji and from Jaipur,Rajasthan,India.Motilalji was given land by the Maharaja for a country home and for a SHIV TEMPLE which was built by him in 1878 and the deity is known as ATALESHWAR MAHADEV. The temple stands in the North West corner of the family property known as aTAL BAN in Jaipur,India.
