Berwick is the English variant of Barwick. Book 'The life of John Barwick, Dean of St. Pauls.' written by Peter Barwick his brother. John was born 1612 at Wetherslack in Westmorland, England. Quote-George Barwick was the eldest son of Nicholas,a descendant of the antient family of the Barwicks of Fair Ridg near the little village of Scaveley in the north part of Lancashire. The chief of the Barwick family was Thomas de Berwick,(son of Hugh de Berwick) who in the reign of that victorious prince King Edward the Third, had the command of all his archers,as appears from an instrument quoted out of the archives by Sir John Bankes, the King's Advocate in one of his arguments in the case of ship-money, published in Rushworth's "collections." Unclear what is meant by "chief" If my information is correct, Nicolas is the son of Thomas de Berwick, but has the surname of Barwick. I have seen other instances of the Berwick/Barwick surnames used interchangably in familys.
