The name came from four brothers that wanted to go from the patronymic system of naming offspring. They were all called Carlsson and the new name came from a forefather with the name Lars Börjesson. This was used locally as Lars Birja. After some of the brothers wanted to spell it Birge and some wanted the original, it was finally decided that Birge sounds better. My grandfather was Valfrid C:son Birge when he was young, and after time, C:son disappeared and Birge was the new family name. You can find it in the US but there are many Birge with the majority hailing from Germany. - Kent Birge
