The surname Conder has several origins. One is from England and was derived from a fishing occupation: 'the conder' is one who signals to boats from a height the direction taken by shoals of herring. Another origin is an Anglicized form of the German Konder. In Germany, the Konder/Conder family originated in the Prussian Rheinland of Germany in the town of Kond, which is today a part of Cochem a city on the Moselle River. When members of the family moved to the area of BeKond, about 50-60 miles down river, they took the surname Konder, which means one coming from Kond. The family eventually settled in Schweich, which is about 12 miles outside Trier, and where several branches of the Konder family still reside.
