My paternal grandfather Aaron Hercovic (with an accent on the last letter c, giving it a soft sound) was born in Yassa, Romania, a fairly big town about 100 km to the wast of the Black Sea, and where many Jews lived. His family had been in business as wine merchants before WWI. Thanks to Red Cross, a recently freed POW refugee (Romania was allied with the Germans) like him managed to leave post-WWI Europe from Genoa by ship to NYC in 1918 or 1919. Charles Brussels
