Archbishop Howley 1766-1848. This family originated in Ireland with this branch located in Ballintogher, Killenaule, Co, Tipperary. The family were settled at this property in 1640 and may originally have come to Tipperary from a place called Ballintogher , Co, Sligo where there was another Howley family located but the relationship at this stage has been lost. Approx. 1640 there were two brothers living on the above named property and as Richard Howley was first born he inherited and his brother William Howley went to England and settled in Manchester and three generations down the line we have his gggranson the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1828. Another member of that family who decended from the Richard Howley who stayed in Ireland and a 3rd cousin of the Archbishop trained as a lawyer in the Middle Temple and completed his studies at Easter 1774 and a meare six years later was the Gov. of the State of Georgia.
