Macklem is a Gaelic name which means "Servant of St. John." The name of my ancestor, James Macklem, was the first to emigrate to the New World. He came to the States first settling in Pennsylvania where he worked as a Schoolmaster for a year or so. He then moved to Ontario Canada and settled in the Chippewa area of Niagara Falls and bought land on the Niagara River, including the Horseshoe Falls and the Dufferin Islands.
