My paternal grandfather was born Michael Philip Martinek, but when he arrived in America he dropped the "ek" and became known as Michael Philip Martin. He was the son of Frank and Barbara Martinek. Frank was born in Bohemia; Michael was born in Hungary. The family were coal miners, traveling where there was work causing them to cross borders in the area of Austria-Hungary. I do not have info on the exact date of his arrival to America or the location. I know he served as an interpreter for the government after he arrived in this country. I have not found his name on any passenger lists of people arriving from Europe. He became Naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1898 or 1899. He met and married Mary Theresa Kausalik. They traveled across the states from Pennsylvania to Iowa from coal mine to coal mine; establishing residency in and around Albia, Iowa. He was killed in a coal mining accident in Albia, Iowa, in August 1923, while teaching/helping his 15 year old son, Frank A. Martin, my father.
